The goal of the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute and Visitor Center is to get people to be aware of and learn to appreciate this unique area. Hiking tours are offered. The Fort Davis National Historic Site is one of the best preserved forts from the 19th Century. A former military post from 1854 to 1891, it sits on 474 acres (192 ha) of land, and holds fully and partially restored buildings. There are hiking trails and interpretive sites located on the premises.
